If you want to point a domain that you have to some other domain name or subdomain, the best way to do that would be to use a CNAME record. By creating such a record, the domain name being pointed loses all its records (A, MX, etc) and instead, it takes the A record of the domain address it is pointed to. In this way, if you are using a web design service by some company that gives you a subdomain, you can use an actual domain and not only will it be directed to the website that you've created, but it will also appear in the browser address bar at all times. Other possible uses of a CNAME record are to redirect all the targeted traffic from different subdomains to their main Internet domain, or to use the webmail service of your webhosting company by using webmail.your-doman.com, for example. The latter will work only by creating a CNAME record for a subdomain since this kind of a record created for the main domain address renders it impossible to use e-mail addresses.

CNAME Records in Shared Web Hosting

Creating a CNAME record using our Linux shared web hosting services is very simple. Our in-house built Hepsia Control Panel includes a section committed to the DNS records of your domain names, so you can set up a new CNAME record for any domain or subdomain hosted within your account in only a few easy steps. There is also a video tutorial inside the same section in which you can see the process first-hand. This feature gives you a number of possibilities - if you set up a company site on our end, for instance, the employees can use their e-mails with the company domain address, not with the address of our mail server. If you choose to create a site by using a different provider which offers online web design services, you can easily forward a domain name hosted here and use it for the website. Last, but not least, in case you have an online store and you have a billing system for http://your-domain.com and/or an SSL certificate, you can set up a CNAME record for the www subdomain and direct it to the main domain name, so all your visitors will be forwarded to a secure URL.

CNAME Records in Semi-dedicated Hosting

If you have a semi-dedicated server with our company and you want to set up a CNAME record, it will take only a couple of clicks to complete this task. The plans are managed via our in-house built Hepsia hosting CP in which you will see a section devoted to the DNS records of the domains and subdomains hosted inside the account. To create a CNAME record, you'll simply have to select the record type and the hostname (domain or subdomain), key in where the latter will be forwarded to and save the change. The new record will be active almost immediately in our system and will propagate worldwide within several hours. Changing or deleting an existing CNAME record within the account is equally simple and easy and takes a click. In the event you experience any issues, you can go through our in-depth help article, see the short video on the subject that we have added in the CP, or simply contact us for assistance.
